Dehydrating Onions at Home & Other Sad Things From the Garden!

Get ready to cry and have the WHOLE house smell like onions when dehydrating onions at home! This year dehydrating onions coincided with a cold front that killed all of the other plants that were growing in the garden! I couldn't even keep the doors to the house open up for long to air out the house without shivering. Needless to say, the whole house smelt like onions including me! And cutting up so many onions had me in tears from the vapors released by the onion.

So long fall outdoor growing season! We had a very short fall growing season outdoors due to the early freezing temperatures. Now, we will have to switch to growing indoors near a sunny window or in the greenhouse. So back to starting seeds indoors we go!

   Create Your Homestead Life!

I believe anybody can homestead no matter if they are on 50 acres or living in one room of someone else's home.   A homestead life is a life of simplicity, self-sufficiency, and hard work. It's a life that teaches us to appreciate the little things, to be grateful for what we have, and to find joy in the everyday moments.

As with anything you want to accomplish in life, it always starts with journaling. If you write down your goals and seek clarity on how to reach them, you are 42% more likely to reach them.

Onion bounty that I want to Dehydrate

Dehydrating onions at home is super simple. You simply wash the onion and remove its outer "paper shell". Cut off top and bottom ends. Slice into 1/2 or 1/4 inch thickness and lay on dehydrator tray.

Onions Ready to Dehydrate

It takes anywhere from 3-9 hours to dehydrate depending on the humidity in your area. Once onions are brittle, remove from the tray and let them cool down. Once cooled, store them in an airtight container. You can use them in your cooked recipes all year long.
