The Old Pro & Con List on the Homestead

Do you remember the old pro and con list? You know the one we use to do before we had a big life decision to make.

Pro & Con List

I am here to say that we should be using the pro and con list more often than just on big life decisions. Around the homestead we have so many pursuits and tasks we could be doing that we need to determine if it is feasible for us before we head down the path to a new homestead goal.

The purpose of a pro and con list is to evaluate the positive and negative aspects of a decision, situation, or choice. It helps in organizing thoughts and weighing different factors before making a decision.

Here are two areas that you could use a pro and con list on the homestead:

    1. When considering new animals, crops, or equipment, listing pros and cons helps weigh the benefits against potential challenges. For instance, choosing between different livestock breeds or deciding on a new tool for the farm.

    2. Whether it's building a new structure, expanding the garden, or implementing a new irrigation system, a pro and con list aids in considering factors like cost, time, and resources required.

When using a pro and con list consider all aspects including financial implications, workload, impact on the environment, and the long-term sustainability of decisions.

In a homestead setting, a pro and con list can serve as a valuable tool for systematic decision-making, especially when balancing the various aspects of sustainability, resource management, and family needs. However, it should complement other forms of assessment to ensure a more holistic approach to decision-making, such as journaling. Journaling is a great tool to help you focus and bring some clarity to what you want out of life. Journaling helps you to create your homestead life.
