We are still in triple digit heat and still have not yet had a drop of rain. My husband is taking advantage of this drought by renting a 307 Cat excavator. He is using it to expand the pond. We are going to do some more cross fencing with the pasture and we need each pasture to have some access to the pond for drinking water.
It didn't seem like a big job when we were looking at it, but now when we are actually doing it, it seems big! Dirt is starting to be piled up everywhere. We have the equipment for one week. We will see how far we can get.
Meanwhile on the other side of the farm, I am still watering like there is no tomorrow. Watering using pond water is a physically demanding job. Besides watering, I am still feeding the farm animals with bread, green tree leaves, and weeds from my garden. I am spending time cutting grass outside of my growing beds and raking it up to feed to the pigs. I also wormed the pigs yesterday.
The garden really is not flourishing. It is sad and discouraging! We are harvesting some things, but not an abundance to preserve for the winter. It is a disappointing growing season. I talked to my daughter yesterday who lives 5 hours down the road. She is having the same garden year like me. It seems like we put so much time, effort, sweat, and tears into this old ground and it is not being rewarded. How did the pioneers do it? We can go to the store to buy tomatoes, but the pioneers could only eat what they grew.
What do we do as gardeners when we become discouraged? I guess I need to cull some dying plants and feed them to the pigs or put it into the compost heap. I also need to harvest what I can. I will put more seeds into the ground and pray for cooler days and rain for them. This drought seems relentless. It can't last forever, can it?
May we have rain in our future and below triple digit heat!
