As you know I have a goal of having a productive farm and a key component of having a productive farm is that I have fruits, herbs, and vegetables growing year round. We are currently in the last week of June. I am harvesting summer crops now on a daily basis. I peruse the garden every morning to pick crops for the day's meals.
In my opinion July is when I start to get garden fatigue. The days are hot and dry. Weeds take over if you miss a few days of weeding. If you go on vacation this time of year, you often come back to mushy tomatoes, gigantic zucchini, and too hard to eat okra. Not to mention a forest of weeds!
This is an important time of the season to continue to plant so that the crops can continue to grow well into late fall. I am in region 3 of Texas. The most difficult aspect of planting this time of year, especially this year, is the lack of rain. The seeds must remain moist to germinate. So I have to be diligent to make sure I water the seeds daily.
I plant seeds daily. I water daily. I also weed and mulch to help control the weeds. Gardening is almost like having another job, so as not to become too overwhelm I do a little bit everyday. I am making progress slowly, but surely in the food production realm. So as I am babying the new seeds I am also in full harvesting and preserving the summer crops. It is a busy time of year!
May we all continue to plant seeds and have hope for a bountiful crop!
