When I was a child my mother always made homemade syrup for our pancakes. My mother made simple syrup out of water and white sugar. I can remember how good it tasted to this day. Making your own syrup lets you control the amount of ingredients you use. You can make it less sweet if desired. Also making your own syrup you do not need to add any artificial food coloring or preservatives. You can also save a bit of money and it is a self-reliant skill. The recipe below is homemade syrup I make for my family. I hope you enjoy it.

Homemade Syrup |
1 ½ cup brown sugar packed
¾ cup water
1 tablespoon butter
½ teaspoon vanilla
Dash salt
Combine all ingredients into a medium sauce pan over medium heat. Stir syrup frequently so as not to burn.

Continue to cook until all bubbly and syrup begins to thicken. If you do accidently overcook and it becomes too thick add more water until desired thickness is reached.
Store this homemade syrup in a covered jar in the refrigerator. I like to serve this syrup warm. You can reheat by microwave or by placing in a sauce pan of water and heat on top of fire.
