24 Hours After Hiving the Honey Bees

24 hours after placing my honey bees in their new hive I went to check on their progress and to remove the shipping package that came with the bees. When I came upon the hive there were lots of bees flying about the hive. This is a good sign.

Next I opened the hive and noticed most of the bees had crawled out of the shipping package and were crowded around the queen bee cage. This made me think that the queen was still enclosed in her cage. I noticed that about half of the sugar water was gone. There were about 12 dead honey bees floating in the sugar water, which unfortunately is normal with this type of feeder.

I removed the shipping package and leaned it against the hive so that the remaining bees can enter the hive. I replaced where I took the shipping package out with several of the frames.

I placed a super on top and moved the feeder up one level and refilled with sugar water. I took the feed can out of the shipping package and placed it on top of the frames so that the bees could finish the feed. I put the top on the hive. I will recheck in another 24 hours.
