Missing Money

Today I found some money from long ago. I found $28.09! I had moved from the town where I went to college over 20 years ago because my husband was in the military and had been transferred to a new duty station and somehow while preparing for the move I  forgot all about a little bit of money I had at a local credit union. But last week I went online and claimed it and received the check today in the mail.
I listen to Clark Howard on a local talk radio station. Clark Howard had mention a while back about going online to find some forgotten money that could be waiting on you to claim. I had put it on my to do list and had not gotten around to doing it. And the main reason I had not yet done it is because I didn’t think I had forgotten any money because I tend to be a very diligent person but somehow I did. I am sure glad I checked online. It took me only a few minutes and I made $28.09.  Of course it is going directly into my savings account.
When my husband left the military we had saved over $156,000. Yes, it is true.  It may be hard to believe, but I still have the bank statement as proof. How did I accumulate this money? Simple, by spending less money than I made. My husband was an enlisted man and I started out by doing day care in our home and then when our children got old enough to go to school I went to work as a public elementary school teacher. So with those jobs you know we were not making a lot of money. But we came up with a plan to save money for a down payment for a house when he got out of the military. But I never imagined we could save that much money. We basically saved that money by doing small things on a daily basis that could save us money such as cooking at home, shopping second hand stores, and mainly by not keeping up with the “Jones”.  When my husband left the military we not only had enough money for a down payment but we had enough to pay the house outright and to not have a house payment.
I hope you find a bit of forgotten money too. I have included the links that Clark Howard had mentioned. Good Luck!
Here is also a link to Clark Howard’s website. He has quite a bit advice on how to save money.
