It is now time to start planning and planting cool season crops so that they can mature before the hot weather begins in Texas.
Cool season crops include:
· Arugula
· Beets
· Broccoli
· Cabbage
· Collards
· Carrots
· Celery
· Chard
· Fennel
· Kale
· Kohlrabi
· Lettuce
· Onions
· Bok choy
· Peas
· Potatoes
· Radishes
· Spinach
· Coriander (cilantro)
This year my cool season crop will consist of broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, lettuce, onions, peas, spinach and cilantro. I have already planted my onions. In February I will directly sow carrot, peas and spinach seeds in my garden. Usually I buy transplants of broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce and cilantro from my local garden store. This year instead I have bought seed packets of these plants when they were on sale at 40% off their regular price. I am going to attempt to grow them from seed. I have already planted them in my greenhouse and will move them out to my garden when the seedlings have gotten off to a good start. If they do not grow well from seed I will then buy the transplants from the garden store.
